CUPACLAD supports net zero ambitions at Greenstone Primary School

Greenstone School

Greenstone Primary School in Coalville is a contemporary educational building shaped by sustainability and context. Set within a woodland landscape, the school reflects a considered architectural approach to its surroundings and the needs of a growing local community.

Designed to support Leicestershire County Council’s net zero carbon ambitions, the project demonstrates how education, design and environmental responsibility can align. CUPACLAD contributes to this vision, forming part of a robust façade strategy that balances performance, durability and coherent composition.

Designed by Lungfish Architects in collaboration with Harworth Group plc, Greenstone Primary School provides 420 primary school places, creating a welcoming and inspiring environment for children to learn, play and grow within their local community.

Nathan Webb, Associate Architect at Lungfish Architects, explains:

Greenstone Primary School is the first of our school designs built for our client, Harworth Group plc. Their challenge to us, as a design team, was to develop a school blueprint that could adapt to any site, offering the flexibility to accommodate a range of school Form Entry requirements, alongside ensuing sustainability.

Stepnell was appointed as main contractor for the project, with Linear Developments (Nottingham) Ltd responsible for the façade installation. In total, 1,000 m² of CUPACLAD 101 Logic was installed across three elevations of each of the six single-storey pavilions, delivering a consistent and durable envelope throughout the school.

CUPACLAD was specified for its ability to combine aesthetics with long-term performance. Its natural slate finish provides a robust and low-maintenance façade solution, while offering the flexibility required to create a consistent material language across the school’s pavilion-based layout.

The system’s sustainability credentials are further reinforced by its BRE Global Verified Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), developed in line with Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) principles. This independent certification provides architects and specifiers with transparent, verified data on environmental performance, supporting informed and responsible material choices.

The natural slate tones of CUPACLAD sit comfortably alongside the timber elements used throughout the project, creating a balanced and warm material palette. This combination reinforces the school’s connection to its woodland setting, blending robustness with a softer, more tactile architectural expression.
