Behind the scaffolding: 6 natural slate projects taking shape in late 2026

The second half of 2026 is well underway, but there are still plenty of projects to look forward to. Over the past few months, we’ve been following the progress of projects across Europe where natural slate is already beginning to reveal its role in the finished design.

Historic landmarks, distinctive buildings and private homes all feature in our selection. Here’s a first look at six projects currently at different stages of completion, all set to be finished before the end of the year.

Château de Gérard le Diable – Ghent, Belgium

Set beside the canal in the historic heart of Ghent, the Château de Gérard le Diable is entering a new chapter in its long history. Work is now at an advanced stage on this imposing medieval building, with natural slate once again taking centre stage across its roofs. The finished result is getting closer by the day.

Private home – Svendborg, Denmark

Overlooking the sea, this private home in Svendborg is already close to revealing its final appearance. Natural slate covers its clean, simple rooflines, sitting beautifully within the Danish coastal landscape, while work continues on the outdoor areas. A project nearing completion in a setting where architecture and landscape share the spotlight.

Hôtel de la Marine – Bordeaux, France

We’ll have to wait a little longer to see the finished Hôtel de la Marine in Bordeaux. Scaffolding and protective sheeting still conceal most of the building, set on one of the city’s elegant squares. Behind them, work continues to progress, with natural slate forming part of a transformation we’ll soon be able to see in full.

Private home – Ireland

Surrounded by the Irish countryside, this traditional home is gradually approaching its finished form. The scaffolding may still be in place, but the natural slate roof is already almost completely visible, framed by the garden and surrounding greenery. A charming project that won’t be under construction for much longer.

The Grand – Nieuwpoort, Belgium

Facing Nieuwpoort’s beach and seafront promenade, The Grand is still keeping much of its transformation hidden behind the scaffolding. Its spectacular location by the sea makes this major restoration hard to miss, even while much of the building remains under wraps. Work is moving forward, and we’re looking forward to seeing this landmark fully revealed.

The Rotunda – Glasgow, Scotland

We finish in Glasgow with a silhouette that’s hard to mistake. The Rotunda, beside the River Clyde, is already showing almost all of its finished appearance, with natural slate standing out across its distinctive circular roof. Machinery and the final activity around the building are a reminder that work isn’t quite over yet, but there’s not long to go.
