Eco friendly cladding: 5 natural slate projects that earned the LEED certification

As consumers started shifting their preferences toward more sustainable products and companies, it caused a trend in corporations claiming to be sustainable. But are businesses truly adapting the changes needed to be sustainable? Probably not.

However, there are some important certifications and recognitions in the construction sector that can give you better insight to what makes a company more environmentally friendly.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most widely used and the most prestigious green building rating system in the world. It has been created by the US Green Building Center, but how does it work?

The LEED scorecard consists of 110 points based on different criteria such as environmental quality, materials used, sustainability, water efficiency or innovation. Depending on how many points your project scores you can get the Silver, Gold or Platinum LEED.

Natural slate is the perfect material to tick some of these boxes. It is a sustainable material with the lowest carbon footprint throughout its life cycle. And once installed, it can last more than a hundred years, avoiding costly repairs and even allowing its reuse in other projects.

Furthermore, CUPACLAD -our natural slate rainscreen cladding system- is ideal to optimize the energy performance of any building, a topic that can earn you up to 19 points.

Below you can find five LEED-awarded projects built with CUPACLAD. From residential to schools, every building can get the certification if the design process is accurate:

  1. Fairfield Library (LEED Gold)

The library was conceived to match the highest sustainability requirements, from natural materials to maximizing daylight for all spaces and views to the outside.

  2. Southern New Hampshire University (LEED Silver)

The new College of Engineering, Technology and Aeronautics (CETA) needed to be state-of-the-art in all aspects, from aesthetics to performance.
