Inspired by French and Georgian architecture, this dwelling by Architeria Architects has been designed to evoke the experience of entering a grand Park Avenue home, defined by elegance and sophistication.

This signature home is one of many timeless/classic homes designed and built by Mel Gawi, the Founder and Principal Architect of Architeria Architects in Melbourne, Sydney and Tasmania – Australia, who explains: “The overall design of many of our projects draws inspiration from past buildings and classic, timeless homes. As natural slate has been used for centuries, it creates a stately, robust aesthetic”

In this context, natural slate emerges as an instinctive choice for luxury residential architecture in Australia. Valued for its authenticity, longevity and understated elegance, it brings a sense of permanence that resonates with homes designed for longevity.

In recent years, Architeria Architects have observed a renewed appreciation for classical residential architecture in Australia. Renowned for designing homes of lasting character and refinement, the studio has incorporated our natural slate into a number of previous projects.

Gawi expands on this philosophy, highlighting the role of materiality in shaping architecture designed to endure: “For classic homes, slate represents durability, timelessness and beauty. Historically significant homes that have stood the test of time often feature slate roofs, which complement the roof form.”

This philosophy is fully realised in Parkwood, where the architecture and the roof are conceived as a unified whole. The natural slate roof reinforces the home’s classical proportions and sense of permanence, anchoring the design with a material presence that feels both grounded and long-lasting.

The installation of natural slate requires experience and precision. At Parkwood, the roof was delivered by Wells Roofing, with specialist slate craftsmanship by Tony Lever of Lever Slate Roofing, resulting in a finish defined by quality, coherence and refined detailing.

This home is defined by its sense of balance, proportion and architectural restraint. Articulated through symmetrical forms, carefully considered rooflines and generous living spaces, the residence reveals interiors enriched by oak flooring, classical detailing and a material palette designed to create warmth and elegance.

Conceived as a personal project and executed with uncompromising attention to detail, the residence demonstrates how natural slate, when combined with considered design and skilled craftsmanship, contributes to homes designed to last for generations.
