Set in Orem, Utah, this high-end residential project by Hebdon Studio redefines modern living through a thoughtful use of materials and purposeful design. Conceived as both a full renovation of an early 2000s home and the creation of a new wellness-focused structure, the project brings together two distinct volumes designed to feel cohesive yet individual “like siblings, not twins.”
Marking the first residential project in the United States to combine CUPACLAD natural slate cladding with Readyslate roofing, the design achieves a seamless architectural language rooted in durability, low maintenance, and lasting aesthetics.
For Brian Hebdon, owner and architect of Hebdon Studio, the vision was clear: “We wanted to create a forever home: something timeless, low-maintenance, and built to last without ever needing to be touched again.”
Hebdon Studio approached the existing residence as a complete transformation, stripping it back to its structure and reimagining it to achieve a more refined and contemporary expression aligned with the owner’s vision.
As the design evolved, material selection became key to reinforcing the relationship between both volumes. Our natural slate products, CUPACLAD and Readyslate, were introduced as complementary elements, bringing coherence to the project while allowing each structure to retain its own identity.
The initial design included a fully metal roof to complement the slate cladding. However, local HOA regulations required the use of natural materials, prompting a reconsideration of the roofing strategy while maintaining the project’s architectural intent.
In response to these constraints, Readyslate was selected as a roofing solution capable of achieving the desired aesthetic while complying with HOA requirements. Its compatibility with CUPACLAD allowed both materials to work together seamlessly across the project.
While CUPACLAD had long been of interest to the architect, previous projects had not aligned in terms of budget or design requirements, making this the right opportunity to finally bring both systems together.
The project extends beyond a single residence, incorporating a second structure conceived as a dedicated wellness space. Rather than replicating the main house, both volumes were designed to relate to one another through a shared language while maintaining their own identity.
This approach translated into different patterns and layouts, allowing each building to express its own character. The main residence features CUPACLAD 101 Logic, while the secondary structure incorporates CUPACLAD 101 Random, creating a balanced relationship between the two volumes.
For Brian Hebdon this quality was essential: “As a natural material, slate brings subtle variation in tone and texture, so the façades never feel flat or overly uniform. It adds depth while still keeping the architecture light and refined.”
Projects like this reflect a growing shift in residential architecture, where materiality and design go hand in hand. At CUPA PIZARRAS, we partner with architects and designers to help bring these visions to life, offering natural solutions that support both creativity and long-term performance.
