One of the most environmentally friendly schools of the United States is located in North Haven, Connecticut. Around 70 children are fortunate enough to learn every day whilst being surrounded by this impressive environment.

All the materials employed in the construction are ecologically responsible and highly functional. In order to comply with the guidelines, our CUPACLAD 101 Logic system was specified to clad the six structures that make up the school.

Therefore, slate is the main feature. It lends its name to the school and, more importantly, gives its outstanding constructive and functional characteristics. The ventilated façade ensures durability, energy efficiency and low maintenance cost.

The school was designed carefully to create uplifting spaces and to stimulate creativity among the students. The four main buildings are placed to create a central courtyard, which is ideal for outdoor activities and playing games.

The aesthetic details were designed to blur the boundaries between the interior and exterior: large windows, open spaces and the use of natural materials.

The invisible CUPACLAD 101 Logic fixing system enhances the texture of the slate with a simple and balanced design. It is even able to withstand the antics of a child.

According to Patriquin Architects, the firm in charge of the project, “All building materials are vetted for durability and non-toxicity”

Slate is a natural product whose life span goes beyond 100 years. Also, it blends perfectly with other ecological materials like wood, as this projects highlights.

“High efficiency building envelopes and adaptive mechanical systems will keep building operations and maintenance costs to a minimum, while enhancing occupant comfort and health”, explain the architectural study.

On the overall project nothing was left to chance. “Building design strategies such as solar orientation, natural ventilation, daylighting and circadian lighting will benefit and enhance the learning potential for the students”, say the company.

The slate school was completed in September 2019, and the students are already taking their lessons. Kids, parents and teachers are not the only ones who have noticed the amazing final result: Slate School received the ENR 2019 Merit Award, New England, for Best Project.

Slate School is also seeking the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, an internationally recognized green building approval system.

This project is part of a building movement that advocates to make constructions healthier for all, humans and environment. That includes the use of natural and sustainable materials, such as slate, with no negative impact on our planet.
